1) Postdoctoral Fellowship in Computational Biosurveillance
The Department of Biomedical Informatics at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for a postdoctoral fellowship involving research on computational approaches for detecting and characterizing disease outbreaks in the population. The project is advancing state-of-the-art research at the intersection of computer science and public health. It provides an excellent opportunity to develop and apply advanced computer science methods to help address a problem of considerable importance to society, namely, the maintenance of the health of the population in the face of the increasing challenges of infectious diseases. This is an ideal position for someone who wants to engage in computer science research that is highly relevant to addressing a high stakes problem. A five-year CDC “Center of Excellence in Public Health Informatics” grant funds this project. The University of Pittsburgh is home to one of only four such centers in the nation.
The postdoctoral fellow will be involved in all areas of the project, particularly in bridging between the conceptual aspects of the research and its implementation.
Candidates should have a Ph.D. in biomedical informatics, computer science, applied math, statistics, or a related field. Candidates should also have a strong working knowledge of an object-oriented programming language.

DESCRIPTION: The Center for HIV Care Services is the service unit of the Administration, providing essential programs and services for people affected by HIV disease. Major service programs of this center include the Ryan White Part B (Adult) and D (Pediatric and Youth) programs, the Housing Opportunities for people with AIDS (HOPWA) initiatives and statewide patient service programs, notably, the Minority AIDS Initiative, rural seropositive clinics, oral health expansion programs and the projects to reduce perinatal transmission of HIV. This is a professional-level consultation and management position. This position serves statewide as the consultant to local health departments, institutions and other agencies regarding the care of HIV seropositive individuals and management of HIV services funding via contracts, unified grant award and memoranda of understanding. The position is responsible for federally funded and state-funded health and supports service programs in the Central region of the state and for mental health service programs in Baltimore City. This position also coordinates transitional case management projects for incarcerated individuals with HIV/AIDS. This position is responsible for program development, administration, management and monitoring, as well as providing consultation and technical assistance to grantees statewide. The ideal candidate for this position should have knowledge of the HIV service delivery system, experience as a grant monitor, and knowledge and experience with federally funded grant programs.

Required Qualifications
Qualified candidates must have a PhD in one of the following health disciplines, MD (Pediatrics Specialty),
Public Health, Epidemiology, Economics, Psychology, Sociology and at least 15 years of related work
experience.
The successful candidate will have a minimum 8 years experience managing research staff, and proven
experience managing budgets.
Must have excellent organizational and analytical skills, and strong verbal, written and interpersonal
communication skills.
A successful track record of winning R01, R03 or R21 grant proposals in the area of child health and a solid
record of peer‐reviewed publications and presentations at national meetings is required.
